Entry Motivation:

Help Up is a compassionate disruption initiative with the single motive of uniting people from all socio-economic tiers of our community in a solution-based drive to clean up the mess that we make in our urban environments. We focus on rivers, canals and storm water drains.

Our commitment to inclusiveness, economic opportunity for all and the sheer BADASS ambition to clean up all this crazy plastic waste has attracted heaps of volunteers as well as the amazing financial support of individual members of the community, who have enabled us to pay unemployed people to volunteer. When you watch our video you wouldn't know the difference between who works for free and who is paid - because at Help Up everybody is equal and keen to work together towards our target.

We work together with the City of Cape Town Solid Waste department to ensure that we can fit in with their collection routes and also to make sure that we understand what challenges they are facing. We have initiated a Franchises are Free initiative in Langa, Cape Town as a pilot project and our first franchisee is the first of many great people who has been awarded a contract by Help Up. Our franchise system is managed via a mobile app, which means that our franchisees record their entire clean up. Before and after photos, what they have collected, who they hired, targets met and confirmation that the city has collected the waste and taken it away. We also provide all the gear for the clean ups like gloves, boots, safety clothing and bags. After the cleanup our franchise partners are paid in COOL GOOD CASH via mobile banking.

Watch our moves because we are scaling up in Gugulethu and Kraaifontein very soon with more of our special Franchises are Free partners! Please remember that your choices matter. And, as Sinethemba Quaka, our Franchises are Free partner says, 'If we cleaned this all up and kept it clean I could be contracted by Help Up to plant trees and vegetables and I love gardens but I don't like dirty things like nappies!' We are entering the Stomp Awards to acknowledge the hard work done by our Help Up Avatars and Volunteers and we look forward to many more awesome clean ups with you guys! Thank you!
